Ovation Band
Artist overview
Ovation belongs in the same early-1980s Go-Go field as the better-known bands that dominate later retellings. Both the I AM GO-GO working catalog and the independent Old School Go-Go catalog preserve an Ovation performance at Club LeBaron in 1980, followed by NW Gardens in 1983 and Chuck E. Cheese in 1984. A later participant statement on Old School Go-Go identifies “Funky Wood” as connected to Shady Groove and as the founder of Ovation Band, giving the archive a direct bridge between two early D.C.-metro groups.

Live & PA archive
The early live trail is small but unusually useful because an independent public collector catalog repeats the same core places found in the I AM GO-GO working list. Exact dates remain source-specific unless a poster, tape label or period listing independently confirms them.
Timeline
Earliest currently corroborated Ovation live lead; establishes activity by 1980 without claiming a formation year.
Public catalog and working archive preserve Ovation in the early live circuit.
Working/public live evidence continues; specialist discography programming identifies a 1984 U.S. 12-inch lead.
Commercial release documents a later Alexandria performance and includes “Boogie Groove.”
“Boogie Groove (You Got to Do It)” appears on Go Go Get Down, placing Ovation in a curated Washington Go-Go retrospective.
Commercial album continues the Ovation Band name and Elwood Jones rights-holder trail.

Connections
Ovation is especially useful for showing how dense the early Go-Go network really was. The Club LeBaron and NW Gardens trail places the group inside the same performance ecosystem as other early bands, while the “Funky Wood” participant statement creates a direct research bridge to Shady Groove. The later T.C. Williams release also gives the band a Virginia/Alexandria continuation that fits the archive’s broader DMV view of Go-Go.
