Artist overview

The Young Senators were a Washington, D.C. soul/funk group whose story sits before Go-Go fully solidified as a named genre. Modern histories regularly place them beside Black Heat and Chuck Brown’s circle as part of the musical foundation from which Go-Go emerged. Their importance also extends beyond D.C.: they became Eddie Kendricks’ road and recording band during his early solo period.

MOTOWN TRAIL

Shows & touring

The strongest documented touring trail begins with the Eddie Kendricks period. An archival Baltimore entertainment index places the group with Kendricks at the Baltimore Civic Center on September 4, 1972, on a bill with the Isley Brothers, Four Tops, Chi-Lites and others.

Money-trail research: band-member oral history also recalls private-party work for U.S. senators in McLean, Virginia and an approximately $600 payment. I AM GO-GO keeps that testimony as oral history until a dated invitation, newspaper item, archive record or other independent source is found.

Why this band matters

The Young Senators page belongs in the foundations lane rather than being forced into a later Go-Go template. Their value is in showing what was already happening in D.C.—percussion, funk, extended groove, band competition, audience energy and musician movement—before the genre’s later form became fixed.
